Many thanks to tuesdaeschild for the beta. And for indulging my rambling on the title ;)

Every year, on the morning of November 4th, they visit Michael’s grave.

It’s not – not only – for the sake of appearances. First and foremost, it’s a tribute to their past, to who they used to be, to what they did and went through. It’s a tribute to the few months during which Sara and Lincoln thought the grave would serve its basic purpose. It’s a tribute to the scars Michael still bears, to the nightmares that keep waking them up, and to the nights they spent taking care of him after they got him back. It’s a tribute to their fortitude and to his silence about whatever he had to do to survive and reunite with them. He’s never talked, not of Sona or of what happened to him after they broke her out of Miami-Dade.

Sara thinks it’s his way to expiate: never confess, hence never be sure he can be forgiven for the mayhem he caused.

Michael Jr. is older now. He’s had more than enough time to learn that, on this day, when his mother tells him on their way back home, “Let’s go see Daddy,” they’ll stop at the tombstone first. Uncle Linc will lay a carefully folded origami on the gray marble, and the wind will whirl away the paper crane a few minutes later. Most of the time, Daddy’s friends – odd little band – will attend too.

One year, in a fit of pre-teen crisis, he decides that the damn family tradition is absurd; he won’t go and wait at home with Dad instead. Sara doesn’t have the time to open her mouth; Linc is already explaining to him – Linc style – that this is not, and never will be, an option. Michael Sr. stays at home because one isn’t expected to pay a visit to one’s own grave, especially when one knows so well what it stands for. Michael Jr., on the other hand, moves his ass now and gets in the car.

Every year, at the end of the day on November 4th, they all meet up at Sara and Michael’s bungalow on the beach. They quietly talk all night long – always of the future – and watch the sun rise on the ocean.

-End-

Beautiful! I love the bittersweetness of it all.

Thank you :)

I'm afraid I'm delving deeper into my denial of the series finale: I wanted to explain in a few words how my various post-series fics could - kind of - fit within canon. As for the rest, I'm clinging to my happy-ending-but-with-some-trouble-in-paradise obsession. So bittersweetness indeed.

Agree with all above-the fic is lovely.:)

I like that Linc is the voice of authority here--because that shows that he hasn't regressed, he's gone forward and been better since it all went down.

Just lovely.
Clair de Lune: pb - lincolnclair_de_lune on August 19th, 2010 10:00 am (UTC)
Showing that Lincoln has gone forward was one of the rare things the show had right in the end - although Sofia... I'm not going there.

More technically, I wanted to 'split' the initiative of those visits between Sara and Lincoln. And if I was eight or ten? Wouldn't want to mess with Uncle Linc, no matter how caring he might be otherwise :-/

Yes, I think there would be some healthy fear there with regard to Uncle Linc! :D I think it's so funny that I can still love him so much after all these years!

The Powers That Be clearly didn't explain their ending well enough. You, on the other hand, have! The silly devils led us to believe that Michael had died! What were they thinking?!!

So this really does make the ending crystal-clear and is a lesson to those inept writers.

never confess, hence never be sure he can be forgiven for the mayhem he caused.

I might have mentioned this already but that is sooooo Michael!

Lovely fic, my dear. :)

Yes, I'm sure these scenes were forgotten somewhere on the floor of the editing room. Along with the one where Christina admits she was lying about Lincoln not being her son.
Did you watch Alias? They had that wonderful thing that 'morphed' anyone's face into someone else's. Obviously, they used it on someone in Prison Break to impersonate Christina, and S4 Christina was a scam. And I'm going to stop with the nonsense now, okay?

Anyway. I needed some logic and rationalization in my denial, so here it is :p
Maz (or foxxy!): You gotta be kidding!tuesdaeschild on August 20th, 2010 09:07 am (UTC)
Ah yes! It's not the writers we have to blame after all! It's the twits who edited it!! And that dying-breath scene of Christina's where she confessed to Michael and Sara that she lied about Lincoln had to be there too, didn't it? Well spotted, dear!

I didn't watch Alias but I do believe you're right that someone was impersonating Christina...and don't ever feel you have to stop with the nonsense because we know how important it is to justify everything, don't we? ;)

Perfect logic and rationalisation in your denial as far as I am concerned!! :)

And the missing scene in which Michael and Lincoln sneak in the prison's pipes to kiss and make out a bit at the end of Riots, Drills and the Devil, too.
What?!
(I loved the brotherly hug way too much to want to see more in it. What happens after it, though? *g*)

Alias had a great character of Evil Mom, played by Lena Olin. I say this without irony. I loved Evil Mom a lot more than the main character/daughter. Sure, they eventually fought to death and sadly, Mom lost, but it was a show with bits of SF/supernatural/improbable technology and there were hints of a way to 'revive' her.

Yes, there were rather too many tasty scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor! Including the one where Sucre lowered the sheet and turned to find Michael doing a sexy strip for him.

I loved the brotherly hug way too much to want to see more in it.

Me too!! But you're right; it could have led to more...

I've never watched Alias but I like this premise. They could, of course, take advice from the PB writers on how to reserect a mom!! ;)

*scoffs* you dirty Michael/Sucre aficionada!

Meh. The one thing we didn't need in S4 - all right, 'the one' is exaggerated: there was a lot of things we didn't need in S4 - was a resurrected, screwing canon Christina.

Yup! That's me! I do blame chanchito_z for it, actually. Or master_chatnoir, these days. :(

Too many things...but screwed-canon-Christina was the very last thing we wanted...okay, maybe Michael's death beat that by a whisker...

Ahhh...this was lovely. I'll be honest, I didn't ever watch "The Final Break," so I only have an idea of what actually happened in that. I sobbed when I saw the grave stone, I don't think I could watch the movie.

But this is just so sweet and lovely. And a little pre-teen crisis makes me feel like Michael and Sara still have their happy-ever-after (real world style).

I loved the last line.
Clair de Lune: origami - canardclair_de_lune on August 19th, 2010 10:07 am (UTC)
It took me months to decide to watch The Final Break. I didn't feel like watching it: in the end, they managed to bring me to the point where I didn't want to see more. It's a good thing I waited or I would have been even more pissed off anyway.

their happy-ever-after (real world style).
This. I didn't ask for a boring perfect "they got married, had many children and lived happily-ever-after." Who would want to - and could - deal with many offsprings from Sara and Michael, anyway? *g*

It's a rather 'utilitarian' ficlet, actually: I wanted to establish for myself in what kind of post-series universe I set most of my stories. I'm delighted you liked it, and thank you for the feedback :)

Perfect ending-I loved your interpretation. It's going to be my reality for the end of the show.

This was my way to rationalize my rejection of the ending on the show... Glad you approve :)
