Summary: There is a theory stating that, each time we make a choice, a new alternate universe is created.
Author’s Note: Written for rosie_spleen’s Bleeding Cuticles Challenge. Not-subtle in-joke inside, no beta.

“There is a theory stating that, each time we make a choice, a new alternate universe is created,” Uhura started, her elbow leaning on the arm of the Captain’s chair, her chin resting on her closed fist, and her eyes firmly holding Mr. Spock’s.

It was late, they were alone on the bridge, and all systems were fully operational. He could grant her a short break and take one himself.

“I’m aware of said theory,” he acknowledged and waited for the punch line. Lieutenant Uhura’s track record indicated that there was a 89,50% chance of punch line. She was a woman with many skills, handsome features, and a sharp tongue.

“What if in one of those universes, you and I were... closer?”

He could have pretended that he didn’t know what she was meaning, but even white lies weren’t very Vulcan. She cocked her head. He arched an eyebrow. She smiled as though she had won a bet made with herself.

“I am your commanding officer. That would be highly inappropriate, Lieutenant.”

His eyes were steady and his voice stern, but it didn’t impress her in the slightest. It never did when she was in this kind of mood; it only served to fuel her banter a bit more. Logic suggested that he tried another approach, but he still had to come up with a better one than reminding Starfleet regulations to her.

She was flirting with him. She did, sometimes, usually during rec hours or long, boring – her words, not his – night shifts like tonight. There again, he could have pretend he didn’t understand why she did that since it was bound to remain unsuccessful, but Vulcans didn’t pretend.

She spun on her heels and sauntered to the upper bridge.

“But what a kick!” she said, sitting in her chair and putting her earpiece in place. “Imagine that, out there, someone, at some point, has made that choice?”

Notes: I hadn’t written anything remotely looking like a Star Trek fanfic since I was fifteen. Luckily *pumps fist in the air* there was no internet back then, and all evidences painfully written on paper have disappeared *wipes forehead*

I don't watch, hon, but if I did, I'd be supporting your fic, coz:

1. you posted unbeta-ed

2. You made a start, and that's very good.

3. This comment gives you 2 points for the day (but once I become competitive, I won't be commenting *g*)

I appreciate the offering, but I wouldn't have counted this point since yours is a positive comment, but on my fabulous personality, not on my almost equally fabulous ficlet ;)

1. I posted un-betaed all the time in French - but maybe it's not what you meant *g* I've posted a few times un-betaed in English too for drabbles, and English has survived my attacks. I thought I'd try harder again.

2. I'm going to boldly go where no drabbler has gone before. Or you know. My warp drive will stall and I'll go back to the spaceport.

3. LOL, who knows, maybe I'll get all greedy and competitive and play dirty too *g* But seriously, if we rely on comments, I'm hardly a threat for you, Madame Spleen ;)

Star Trek, my first true TV obsession love... I've stop stalking it We're good old friends now, but just seeing the icon of Uhura makes me want to watch a few episodes.

*whispers* In an alternate universe, that very choice WAS made! And yay for that choice, because I'm a big shipper of it!

Well done. (And thank goodness for the stuff that the internet doesn't get hold captive over our heads, right? I'm a 1000 times grateful for my stuff that just got tossed out when I realized it was no good!)

Hehe, it was *nods*

I'm very much a TOS girl. I liked the reboot but realized on my second viewing that what I anticipated the most were the scenes with the real Nimoy's Spock. That said, playing on the "in an alternate universe" thing... definitely. There was an established, rather creepy one in TOS, where all values were inverted and the characters, evil (and kinda hot *g*). I think it's one of the rare shows that can get me interested in AUs.

I cringe at some of the stuff I wrote a few years ago, so my teenage years' production? Don't want to think about it.

I've seen enough of TOS and the early movies to have a familiarity with the characters, but I didn't fall for Spock until he was played by teh Quinto. I really love the Reboot, it's like my favorite movie, possibly of all time.

I can't wait for the sequel. Hurry up and get here, 2012!

Aside of personal preferences, I've watched TOS and the movies so many times that seeing other actors was weird. I had the sensation of watching a movie. All right, I was watching a movie, but it has a "movie in a movie" feel.

Next one is only in two years? Hang in there *hugs*

So like this interchange between them, it would likely be just the sort of conversation these two would have!

Thank you :)
It's been way too long since I watched an episode of Star Trek, but I remember a scene in which Uhura asked Spock about Vulcan's moon, or a couple of other exchanges along the same line. I've tried to find the same tone here.
