Prison Break - The Weaker Position
Title: The Weaker Position
Author: clair_de_lune
Pairing: Michael/Mahone
Spoilers: 3.01
Category: Slash
Rating: PG-13
Summary: He’s a lot of things, but naïve hasn’t been one of them for a long time, so he doesn’t fool himself into believing this is anything more than a hate/fascination sort of appeal.
Notes: Because recycledfaery suggested some Michael/Mahone and even though this is really not my cup of tea, I’m apparently weak and unable to resist a challenge... Thanks to be_cool_bec for proofreading it :-)

(Read entry in light format)

It never went that far with Oscar Shales.

Granted, it went pretty far with Oscar Shales – he killed the guy, didn’t he? – but not that far. And definitely not that way. For all his cunning, Shales never had Michael’s brain. For all his preponderance in Alex’s cases and life, he never was as pivotal as Michael is now. For all his taunting and brashness, he never sent Alex seething with... something Alex isn’t sure he wants to identify, whatever it might be.

He wants Michael... Well, he wants Michael to help him getting out of here. But he also wants to get Michael, to see how his mind works, watch him as he plans and thinks and plots. The kind of stuff Alex couldn’t really observe when they had this hunter/hunted dynamic. Should be interesting now they’re locked up together, relying on each other – no matter how Michael may feel about it, they will have to rely on each other.

He wants Michael to quit this damn smug attitude; he wants him to show some helplessness, some vulnerability. The expression on his face right after the fight in the yard has been a real power trip to Alex as well as a surge of relief – a blatant, obvious proof that Michael indeed needs his help. He craves to hear him ask and plead and beg in ten different ways. He can almost make up the harshly whispered words and the angry little snorts following them.

He wants to seize him and feel him. He has to make sure Michael won’t escape him this time around, either physically or intellectually. He wants to get inside of him – and at this point, Alex doesn’t bother anymore to try and disregard the double entendre of his own thoughts. He’s not absolutely sure, but he has a hunch he means that in both metaphorical and literal ways.

He isn’t naïve. He’s a lot of things, but naïve hasn’t been one of them for a long time, so he doesn’t fool himself into believing this is anything more than a hate/fascination sort of appeal. Doesn’t make the sensation go away, though. It’s still lingering in the back of his brain, in the pit of his stomach, on his fingertips. It makes him want to grasp, shove and bend Michael to his will. He needs to show some domination over him, and that’s not good – needing something is never good, it always, always, puts you in the weaker position.

But he does grab Michael, because Michael is right here, tantalizing and smirking, and Alex can’t get a hold on the urge – it may be because of Michael himself, or because of the med withdrawal, or a mixture of both: it makes no difference, truly. He pushes him in the darker corner of his cell, against the wall, and pins him there, his hands painfully holding Michael’s wrists to his sides. He’s astonished to meet no resistance at all, not even a hint of struggle or a slight protest, and for a few seconds, he thinks Michael is still dazed by the fight that just happened in the yard, unable to react. He releases his left wrist and Michael doesn’t move, doesn’t blink; he just looks at him and waits. Before he can process that he’s actually doing it, Alex grips his jaw in a tight hold and kisses him – lips roughly crushing lips and teeth viciously biting flesh. Michael’s breathing gets harsher, but he doesn’t try to fight or even to pull away. On the contrary, he opens his mouth and lets Alex’s tongue in; he lays his free hand on Alex’s hip and curls his fingers, digging hard into the flesh. He doesn’t reciprocate the kiss, he doesn’t really participate, but he’s a hair’s breadth away from it. He’s holding back, and Alex knows it’s deliberate; he’s teasing him, baiting him to demand more. His hand on Alex’s hip brings them closer and closer again, until Alex is pressing him into the wall, muscles tensing and rippling against each other’s. He can taste and smell dirt and sweat on Michael’s skin – nothing that should be enjoyable, really – and he dips deeper into his mouth, chasing for another flavor.

There’s a change in Michael’s demeanor, and he angles up his chin and presses his lips back to Alex’s. It’s subtle and restrained, but Alex revels in the sensation. He has physically caught him; this is at least a victory, even though he doesn’t get where this sudden compliance comes from.

When he steps back, he raises his head and meets Michael’s gaze. The half smirk, as characteristic as a trademark, is back – it has hardly been wiped off for a short moment – and Michael’s eyes are sparkling with amusement.

“Is that all, Alex? Will that be enough of a thank you? Or is there anything else you want, or need?”

Right now, there’s a whole bunch of things he wants and needs. None of them he’s willing to acknowledge. He clenches his fists, purses his lips and stares hard at Michael.

“I’ll let you know,” he shoots back; both of them are aware he has lost that particular battle, however, no point in denying it.

Needing something is never good.

-END-

End notes: I usually don’t write Mahone slash. Actually, I don’t write Mahone gen either – once, in French, a while ago – I don’t even like Mahone (sorry ;-)). So it has been quite an imagination exercise for me and I’m not even sure this thing makes any sense...

Alo': Ø | oh fuck !alohomoraa on September 22nd, 2007 07:22 pm (UTC)

Veronika: [pb] Michael / cutekentucka on September 22nd, 2007 07:01 pm (UTC)
actually, that's pretty much what I'd imagine how this first 'contact' between them would work. it is morbid fascination on Mahone's part, and Michael's feeling, well, not obliged to thank him, but I guess it'd amuse him that Mahone would actually want *that* in return.

for all that you don't like Mahone, this was really well written, IMO.
Clair de Luneclair_de_lune on September 22nd, 2007 08:28 pm (UTC)
I'm relieved glad it worked for you. I can get why people see some UST between them, but actually getting there... not that easy/obvious for me :-p
Thanks for commenting :-)
Veronika: [sga] McKay / love mekentucka on September 22nd, 2007 10:55 pm (UTC)
I just read the comment thread before mine, where you were talking about their choice of names they're calling each other... it amused me greatly. I haven't thought about that for a long while. the English way of sometimes using the last name as intimately as the first name has gotten too normal for me lately, especially in Stargate Atlantis. but when Michael called Mahone 'Alex' in 3x01, I literally felt the UST jump up a couple of notches.

what's in a name?
a lot, apparently...
Clair de Lune: pb - michael mahoneclair_de_lune on September 23rd, 2007 07:56 am (UTC)
Well, they're sort of best enemies, arent't they? They have to be on first name basis :-p
JJ: wm9jolietjones on September 22nd, 2007 07:07 pm (UTC)

It makes perfect sense, well done. You've got these two just right. Can we persuade you to carry on with this and develop their relationship? I really like your Michael and I wish I was articulate enough to explain why, but they are both so in character.

Brilliant. Thank you.

And English isn't even your first language!

Aw, thanks for your comments and for your support :-)

Can we persuade you to carry on with this and develop their relationship?
I guess it will depend on the new episodes, but if I do, it will probably be just drabbles or short ficlets. Even in French, I don't often write long stories, I usually stick with one shots. And since writing in English is harder for me, it gives me an excuse to be lazy and keep them short :-p

And English isn't even your first language!
Um, well... beta-readers are great people ^__^

Nicely done :o)

I read earlier today, really enjoyed it, but it took me a while to figure out just what I wanted to say as I'm having -- there is no question out there anymore that I utterly adore Mahone, right -- a rather hard time with Michael having the upperhand over Alex.

I just tend to see a lot of cat and mouse, who knows who really wants what, games rather than one or the other playing with the other.

I'm not complaining at all!
No SIR!! I'm thrilled to get so much great Mahone fic and I guess I'll just have to get use to the Michael love prevailing for those who don't like Alex.

GREAT JOB!!
I'll be back for more for sure if you keep writing this pair.

P.S. Cant you increase the font at all next time or post it straight to the fic LJ with the larger font? I had a really hard time reading even with my glasses on.
Clair de Lune: pb - michael mahoneclair_de_lune on September 23rd, 2007 07:54 am (UTC)
The sad thing is I used to like Mahone, and then around mid-season 2, he started to irritate me. However, how as hard it is for me to admit it, I kind of didn't... totally dislike him in the season premiere. I guess there's still hope for me ;-)
Like him or not, I tried to be fair with both characters, but I do think Michael can be pretty manipulative - used to, at least: I'm a bit stuck in season 1.
Thanks a lot for reading and commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed it despite my mistreating Mahone ;-)

lol, I'm sorry, I like small fonts. But I know they can be annoying, so I'll add a link to the entry in LJ "light format": like that, okay?
PamalaX: Newboyfriendpamalax on September 24th, 2007 06:35 pm (UTC)
Oh I certainly understand not liking Mahone :o)

I wrote the character all last season after writing MS the season before so I really know what a tough sell he is with the fans.

I gotta get use to seeing Mahone in fic from Michael loving gals. And I am! What a great week to be a Mahone fan :o)

Thanks so much for the larger print version. FANTASTIC!!

I'm old... my eyes are not what they used to be so that was MUCH better.

Looking very forward to the next MiMa fic from ya.

I can see this being canon, if it weren't, you know, slashy. And as others have mentioned - your writing and characterization is extra-fabulous considering you don't actually like Alex, and English isn't language number one. Great job, I really enjoyed it!

It completely makes sense. Mahone's fascination with Michael, his need to understand and even more to dominate. Gotta love the alpha male gene. ;) And I love how your Michael. Always in control, manipulating even when he appears submissive. Mahone is in for quite atrip, I'd imagine.

Thanks for writing and sharing!

You do write Michael/Mahone very, very well!! If only you had written/will write more of it because you really have captured their characters perfectly!

Alpha Alex is not really a match for sumissive Michael though because our favourite genius is manipulating again! ♥ Manipulative Michael!

Clair de Lune: pb - michael mahoneclair_de_lune on May 15th, 2011 11:52 am (UTC)
Thank you :D I wish I still wrote as many pairings as I used to, but there's so few fics around, and each one I write demands so much "effort" that I'm afraid I tend to focus on pairings I lreally love and/or would want to read if someone else wrote them. Not stellar for variety, huh? *grumbles at self*

Oh yes, Michael's weakness for lack of a better word - or apparent weakness - might as well be one of his strenghts. I'm pretty sure I used this in other fics.

♥ Manipulative Michael!

But is there a kind of Michael you do not ♥ ? *smooches you*

Indeed.
When I had a lot of ideas and craving for fics, I didn't mind "wasting" - using quotes here because I don't think it was actually "waste", you know what I mean - time on pairings I didn't care for too much or as much. Not to mention that I liked the challenge of writing them. Now? More effort to complete something, so need to focus on my favs.

*ponders* There really isn't! ;)

I had a hunch ;)

I liked the challenge of writing them.

It is more of a challenge when it's pairings we're not so comfortable with, isn't it?

Now? More effort to complete something, so need to focus on my favs.

That does make good sense.

*nods* Or unusual ones, or pairings that need a bit of work to, well, work. I mean, I wrote Michael/Lisa Rix, Lincoln/Sucre or Sara/Gretchen :-p Trying to make them work was a big part of the fun.
Maz (or foxxy!): Sweet Boytuesdaeschild on May 22nd, 2011 04:40 pm (UTC)
None of those pairings would be easy, though I suspect Lincoln/Sucre is the most difficult. Sara/Gretchen wouldn't need to be a nice pairing, would it? I wrote Michael/Lisa once too. :)
Clair de Lune: origami - canardclair_de_lune on May 22nd, 2011 05:05 pm (UTC)
I wrote Lincoln/Sucre twice, one crackastic, and another one serious. Lot of head-scratching was involved, at least for the serious one :-p
Sara/Gretchen was quite... not dark, but not happy at all. It's post-series, with Sara married to Michael but a bit damaged after what she went through.

I wrote Michael/Lisa once too. :)
I know. For RoK, right? If I remember correctly, it was your fic that prompted me to write mine. Emulation rules!! *g*

Lot of head-scratching was involved, at least for the serious one :-p

It's certainly easier to write cracktastic fics, especially for tricky pairings!

It's post-series, with Sara married to Michael but a bit damaged after what she went through.

That's a scenario I can believe. The events in PB could well have left many of the characters screwed up.

For RoK, right?

I think it was actually for foxriverfic because master_chatnoir wanted Lisa/Michael. But yay! for promting you to try it too!! Emulation does indeed rule! :)

Ha, I love rewatches for that reason, finding new things about characters to enjoy (or remembering why you liked that one character so much to begin with).
