Prison Break - Aloha, Sadness
Title: Aloha, Sadness
Author: clair_de_lune
Character: Debra Jean Belle
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG
Words: ~ 275
Disclaimer: Not mine. Just borrowing them for a while.
Summary: She heard the news earlier.
Notes: Set post 2.07 Buried. Not beta-read because I’m bold like that. I didn’t want to bug one of my betas since it’s not like a lot of people will actually be interested in a gen drabble, especially one about a minor character. (But if you happen to read it... feel free to mock correct my English ^^)

She won’t watch television tonight. She heard the news earlier. It was all over the channels, no way she’s missed it. National television played it a few times, local channels can’t seem to have enough of it. Her father won’t turn the damn thing off and she doesn’t have the courage – let alone the energy – to tell him the truth. How well she knew the guy. So, she doesn’t watch television. She says that she’s feeling queasy, which is quite an understatement, excuses herself from the dinner table, and goes to her room. She heard the news, caught a few images; it’s more than enough. She doesn’t want to remember him like that, eyes glassy and wide open, face frozen, and clothes full of blood.

The reporters, the police, the FBI... she doesn’t believe what they said, that he wanted to escape and tried to kill an agent. He’s not a killer – he was not a killer. She tried to explain that to the cop who interrogated her, but the woman didn’t take her seriously. She just mentioned something about being in shock and offered her sympathy and a list of doctors. Maybe for the first time in her life, Debra actually thought Fuck you and she had to bite her tongue into silence.

She briefly wonders if later, when the shock, the sorrow and the numbness are gone, she will feel used or betrayed. It would surely make things easier, but she doesn’t think she will. He’s been honest and candid with her. She curls up on her bed and, when memories flash under her closed eyes, she greets them with a sad Aloha.

Giving back to Caesar...: The title? Rip-off from Bonjour Tristesse (Hello, Sadness) by Françoise Sagan. Prettier than the Aloha, Memories I first came up with.

God, what are you doing to me? Poor, poor Debra Jean.

This is great, in case I haven't made that clear. *g*

*pats you* I'm sorry. It looks like re-watching episodes late at night induces sligthly depressing fics.
Thanks a lot ;)

I have been waiting for something to write a fic describing Debra Jean's reaction, and this is just perfect. *hugs it*

Just a small suggestion, if I may?

She tried to make understand that to the cop who interrogated her, but the woman didn’t take her seriously.

Perhaps, instead of "make understand", you can try, "explain"?

This is lovely!

I didn't really care for Tweener, except in the last couple of episodes: they had to make him likable right before they killed him, of course. But Debra Jean and him were a cute pairing, and I think the scenarists gave Tweener a nice scene when he tricks Mahone so he can tell her good bye. And, oh well, it was a small plot bunny ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I might have a gallicism here ^^ I fixed the sentence.

I'm glad you liked this :)

I also liked the Tweener-Debra Jean pairing. Tweener also kind of annoyed me until those defining episodes for him in S2--I was close to tears when I finally got to that scene of him saying goodbye to Debra Jean while the FBI were dragging him away...

I really, really liked this. Well-written fics about minor characters have a special place in my fangirl heart.

Most peeps forget about poor Debra Jean, but you have written a believable account of how the news would have affected her. Loved it.

Between the news and all the fuss, poor Debra probably had a hard time ^^
Thanks a lot for the kind comment :)
